Muster Team!
Fire department muster events have been around for a hundred years or more. The games of muster bring a competitive side to the fire service (as if firefighters need to be more competitive...). The Middlebury Fire Department has had great success in the twenty five years on both the state level and the county level.
Addison County Firefighters Association held a yearly muster for many years in the town of Middlebury before it moved to the fairgrounds in the town of New Haven. Many teams from the county participated in the event each year. Middlebury Fire had one of the best county muster teams and as a result were county champs in 1983 and again from 1986 - 1990. No county team has ever had a run like that before 1983, nor has any team done it since.
In 1990 the team started to move to the state level. The games are played yearly at the state convention which changes location ech year (it will be in Middlebury in 2007). Again our success paid off, the team brought home a trophy in almost every event . As a team we finished second several times only a few points back. At the 2005 state muster games, the team finished second in the sportsmanship award area. But in 2006 the team was able to capture the title, which is on display at Sation 1.

Some of the games that are played each year at the state convention muster games are:
Water polo
This event is much like hockey without the ice. The court is 80' x 30' with two hose lines on each side of center court. The object of this game is to push a volley ball passed the end line to score points. The game is played with four three minute quarters with the teams changing sides each quarter. There are seven players on each team.
Bucket Brigade
This event replicates putting out a house fire the old fashion way using just a bucket.

The starting line is 25' from a holding tank and the holding tank is 20' from the platform.
The object of this eight player game is to fill a barrel at the top of the platform as fast as you can using only the eight buckets that are at the holding tank.
Wet HoseThis event is all about not making any mistakes. The starting line is 25' back from the hydrant position and the hydrant is 100' from the nozzle line and the target is 40' after that. The object of this event is to connect the hose to the hydrant, connect the hose in the middle, and connect the hose to the nozzle at the end . Then wait for all six team members to run to the nozzle line and spray the target down.
Mid-Night Alarm
Oh the joy of putting on equipment.
This event is the same as wet hose but you must get all your fire gear on before you start.

Portable Pump
Not much portable about running with a pump that weighs 100lbs.
The starting line is 25' back from the equipment line and the equipment line is 50' back from the water tank position. That is 50' back from the nozzle line with a target out at 20 more feet.
The object of this event is to run from the starting line to the equipment line, grab the equipment and head to the water tank put it all together and hit a target in about 14 seconds.
