Search For Missing Student

The Middlebury Fire Department Technical rescue team has been working along side of Saranac NY fire department in the search for Nick Garza for several months.  The Middlebury College freshmen disappeared on February 5th 2008.  The Otter Creek has been the main focus of the search.  Saranac NY fire department specializes in swift water rope rescue.

Using underwater cameras and search crews in the water, Saranac Fire Department along with the Middlebury Fire Department battled high water and fast currents during several days of searching.  No clues were found during the search.  Saranac Fire was not willing to give up and graciously returned to Middlebury when ever new information was available.

The search ended sadly on May, 27 2008 when the body of Nick Garza was pulled from the Otter Creek bellow the falls.  Doing a water depth and temperature check Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley made the discovery.  The Middlebury Fire Department along with Various state agency’s assisted in the recovery.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Garza family.

Many thanks to the Saranac NY Fire Department for there hard work and commitment to the the search.
